An estimated 10-20% of the population has nickel contact allergy (the most common metal allergy worldwide), and oral nickel exposure can cause intraoral contact stomatitis, burning mouth sensation, and perioral dermatitis in sensitized individuals. Copper tongue scrapers have gained popularity in Ayurvedic practice due to copper's inherent antimicrobial properties — the EPA registered copper alloys as antimicrobial materials in 2008, with contact-kill efficacy against >99.9% of bacteria within 2 hours.
