High-alcohol mouthwash has been investigated as a risk factor for oral cancer (IARC 2012: alcohol in mouthwash is 'not classifiable'). Chlorhexidine alters oral microbiome and can affect blood pressure regulation via nitrate-reducing bacteria. Daily use kills both pathogenic and beneficial oral bacteria.
