Electric Toothbrush Replacement Heads — Microplastic Bristle Shedding, Nylon-6 Fragmentation, Oral Microplastic Ingestion — safety profile

Low risk

Electric toothbrush replacement heads (Oral-B, Sonicare, and generics) use nylon-6 or nylon-6,12 bristles anchored in a polypropylene or ABS head, oscillating at 7,000-31,000 strokes per minute.

What is this product?

Electric toothbrush replacement heads (Oral-B, Sonicare, and generics) use nylon-6 or nylon-6,12 bristles anchored in a polypropylene or ABS head, oscillating at 7,000-31,000 strokes per minute. The mechanical stress of high-frequency oscillation combined with toothpaste abrasives progressively fragments bristle tips, generating microplastic particles that are swallowed or expectorated. A 2020 study in the Journal of Hazardous Materials estimated that toothbrush bristle wear contributes 0.5-2.2 mg of microplastic per brush head per replacement cycle (3 months), with a significant fraction in the ingestible size range (<100 um). Electric toothbrushes generate more bristle wear than manual brushes due to higher stroke frequency and applied force. The ADA recommends replacing heads every 3 months; however, most consumers use heads 4-6 months, increasing fragmentation. While the health effects of oral microplastic ingestion remain under investigation, nylon microparticles have been shown to adsorb oral bacteria and potentially serve as vectors for bacterial translocation into the gastrointestinal tract.
